The Indian Army ( Bhāratīya
Thalsēnā ) is the land-based branch and the
largest component of the Indian Armed Forces.
The President of India serves as Supreme
Commander of the Indian Army,  and it is
commanded by the Chief of Army Staff
(COAS), who is a four-star General. Two
officers have been conferred the rank of Field
marshal, a Five-star rank , which is a
ceremonial position of great honour.
The Indian Army has a regimental system, but
is operationally and geographically divided into
seven commands , with the basic field
formation being a division . It is an all-
volunteer force and comprises more than 80%
of the country’s active defence personnel. It is
the 2nd largest standing army in the world,
with 1,129,900 active troops and 960,000
reserve troops. The army has embarked on
an infantry modernisation programme known
as Futuristic Infantry Soldier As a System ( F-
INSAS), and is also upgrading and acquiring
new assets for its armoured, artillery and

The indian army has 6 operational and 1 training command.Each command is headed by GOC-in-C(General officer commanding in chief)
The command consists of 2 or more corps.Each corp consists of 3-4 divisions.Indian army has 13 corps and is commanded by GOC.
A division is headed by GOC of a rank of Major general. the Indian Army has
37 Divisions including 4 RAPIDs (Re-
organised Army Plains Infantry Division), 18
Infantry Divisions, 10 Mountain Divisions, 3
Armoured Divisions and 2 Artillery Divisions.
A brigade is headed by a brigadier.each brigade may consists of 3000 combat troops.
Army has infantry brigade,artillery brigade,armoured brigade,parachute brigade,air defence brigade,engineer brigade and many more..
A battalion is commanded by a colonel.It consists of 4 rifle companies.
A company is headed by a Major or Lieutenant general
It has about 80-150 personnel.
A platoon consists of about 10-15 soldiers and is commanded by a platoon commander JCO.
